Warwick driver eyes off Le Mans after winning sports award
MOTORSPORT: Competing in the Le Mans 24 Hour race is one of the plans this year for Warwick motor racing driver Matt Campbell.
Campbell won his monthly Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Senior Sports Star award in the Bathurst 12 Hour early last year before moving to a base in Germany to drive with Porsche.
He has moved up from the Porsche Junior Program to a Porsche Young Professional role, which took him back to Germany before his overall senior sports star award win on Monday night at the Warwick RSL Memorial Club.
Campbell said he was honoured to again be the major award winner after being first overall last year with Allora thrower Matthew Denny.
"It means a lot to win the award. Firstly thank you to the Warwick Credit Union and Daily News, I am sorry I wasn't able to be in attendance again due to my commitments overseas and congratulations to all other award recipients,” he said.
"To be among names like Olympic gold medallist Dean Butler and Matthew Denny is always special and goes to show what is possible.
"Warwick is hugely close to my heart and it is where I learnt everything in my early career.”
Looking back on last year, Campbell said it was hard to pinpoint one success in particular.
"There were so many high points along the way, but definitely receiving the Sir Jack Brabham Award is right up there,” Campbell said.
The Brabham award is presented by CAMS each year to one Australian driver for their success overseas.
In his new role with Porsche, Campbell will now be racing the World Endurance Championship in the new Porsche RSR, including the Le Mans 24 hour.
He is working towards competing in the Bathurst 1000 again but it would be in the wildcard entry with Triple Eight Race Engineering.
"Unfortunately I have date clashes with other Supercar endurance events but even though nothing has been confirmed, would love to be back at Bathurst,” he said.
