Warwick driver fifth at Bathurst at Easter

MOTORSPORT: Warwick driver Jamie Furness has recorded a fifth in the feature HQ race in a support class to the Bathurst Six-Hour.

Furness qualified in the top 10 and then was fifth and sixth in heats on Saturday and fifth in the main race on Sunday.

He said he was delighted to be able to mix it with the top three or four drivers.

"The competition is much tougher than when I won in 2012 and 2014. Some drivers put $100,000 a year into their car but I only spend a fraction of that,” he said.

"I was happy to be the highest placed car from Queensland and I am coming home with a nice straight car.”

His uncle and former Warwick driver Gary Bonwick blew a motor in qualifying and another replacement motor in the feature race so was unplaced.

Toowoomba driver Brock Mitchell travelled to Bathurst with Furness and ended up ninth overall. Mitchell went to Bathurst aiming for a top-10 finish in a field of 55 and a time under three minutes, two seconds, and achieved both his aims.
