MOTOR RACING: Warwick driver Matt Campbell is one good race away from winning his first Porsche Carrera Cup championship.

Campbell, 21, goes into this weekend's final round at the Gold Coast with a 124.5-point lead over Alex Davison.

One of the advantages for leader Campbell this weekend is Gold Coast is a circuit where it is notoriously hard to pass.

He won all three races at the Gold Coast last year to force his way up to third place in his first cup series.

"We had a fantastic weekend at Gold Coast last year, winning all three races, so I think we'll have good speed there,” Campbell said.

"It is obviously a vastly different track to what we are used to throughout the season and especially our last round at Bathurst.

"You have to be very close to the walls and push hard over the high kerbs.

"It's a track that rewards commitment and I'm looking forward to racing there.”

If Campbell wins, it will be a first individual win for a driver from McElrea Racing.

Campbell will also compete in a Nissan Motorsport team in the Gold Coast 600 V8 race on Sunday.

He is combining with Todd Kelly this season and they would have finished with a top-10 position at Bathurst except for another driver giving Kelly a little nudge late in the race.

Earlier in the season, they combined for seventh at Sandown in Campbell's V8 debut.
