Warwick driver has great run at Monza in Italy
MOTORSPORT: Matt Campbell has won a round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup on one of the most famous raceways in the world.
He won round 9 at Monza in Italy after being first in practice. Qualifying was washed out so practice times were used to determine positions and Campbell started from pole.
It was his second win in a Supercup race this season.
His mother Angie Campbell said she was always proud of the efforts of her son on the race track.
"I spoke to Matt before the race and he said he liked the Monza track,” she said.
Earlier in the season, Campbell was third in the standings before dropping back to fourth but his win at Monza put him back into third.
Two hours after his win, Campbell was at the airport to fly home to Australia to compete in all three endurance races in the V8 Supercars season in combination with last year's title winner, Shane van Gisbergen.
The first of the endurance events is at Sandown on September 16-17.
After endurance events at Sandown, Bathurst and Gold Coast, Campbell will return to Europe to finish his first Supercup season.
