Warwick driver impresses in debut in V8 racing
MOTOR RACING: Warwick driver Matt Campbell joined with Todd Kelly for a creditable seventh in the first endurance event of the V8 Supercars series.
It was Campbell's first weekend in the V8s for the Nissan Motorsport team.
Campbell and Kelly had some car troubles at Sandown on the first two days.
On Saturday, Campbell was 23rd in the co-driver race, 32 seconds behind the leader. Kelly was also well back in the field but the pair improved dramatically today.
With two wins in the first two races in the Porsche Carrera Cup at the weekend at Sandown, Campbell extended his lead but things didn't go as well today.
He was on pole position and in race 2 on Saturday made it five wins from the past five races.
Campbell did not finish today in race 3 for the Porsche drivers after experiencing gearbox problems.
In three weeks he will do it all again at Bathurst in his cup car and in the Bathurst 1000 with Kelly. They will then compete together at the Gold Coast 600.
Campbell has the chance to be the first individual winner for the McElrea Racing team in the Porsche Carrera Cup but with a non-finish in race 3 today, he will need to make every post a winner in the final rounds at Bathurst and Gold Coast.
