Warwick driver on the way to Bathurst
MOTORSPORT: Friendships go out the window when the chequered flag at Bathurst is on the line.
Warwick driver Jamie Furness and Brock Mitchell, of Toowoomba, are both well aware of this as they prepare to tackle Mt Panorama in the Holden HQs which is a support class to the Bathurst Six-hour this weekend.
Former Warwick driver Gary Bonwick, an uncle of Furness, will also compete in the HQ class after twice winning at Easter at Bathurst. He is a dual Australian champion.
"It is going to be bragging rights for whoever wins,” Furness said.
Mitchell takes on his third attempt at the iconic track this weekend, while Furness has conquered the mountain twice. And there is no feeling quite like seeing the chequered flag.
"It is pretty cool to come across the chequered flag first ahead of 55 cars,” Furness said.
They have dominated the Queensland racing scene for a while, keeping the Holden HQ state title on the Darling Downs for the past four years.
"We have just been swapping it around between us,” Furness said.
Mitchell will line up on the grid alongside Furness, living what he said is a dream as he looks to make the top 10 for this first time.
"It is unreal, it is not like any other track you will race on," he said.
"I am lost for words when I race around that track. It is the best track in the world as far as I am concerned.
"This is definitely a dream come true I for-sure never thought I would be doing anything like this.”
