Warwick driver to represent Australia
MOTOR RACING: Matt Campbell has been selected to represent Australia in the Porsche Junior Driver Shootout in Germany on September 26-27.
Campbell drives for the McElrea Racing team and won both races in the Porsche Carrera Cup at the weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park to increase his lead to 72.5 points in the battle for the championship this year.
He capped a fine weekend when he won the race between all the professional drivers in both the Australian and Asian cup series.
At the weekend, the 21-year-old from Warwick was named as the Australian representative in the shootout.
McElrea Racing team owner Andy McElrea said he was cautiously confident Campbell could win the first professional drivers' championships for his team.
"We have won the teams championship twice and the semi-professional but never the professional," he said.
"Matt has two advantages over most of the drivers in his class, he learns quickly and is adaptable."
In the next two months, Campbell will drive in both Carrera Cup and V8 series at the Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast 600.
He will drive for Nissan Motorsport with Todd Kelly and continue his title claims in the Carrera Cup.
"I am confident he can handle both classes as last year he raced in the Carrera Cup and GT series in two different cars 30 minutes apart and got pole in both," he said.
He will race at Sandown on September 16-18 before heading to Europe where the eight best young (U25) drivers from eight Carrera Cup countries will be timed head-to-head.
