Warwick driver wins national series in Porsche Carrera Cup
MOTORSPORT: Warwick driver Matt Campbell has won his fifth successive Porsche Carrera Cup race to secure his first series win.
Campbell went into the final round of the series with his seventh successive pole position and a convincing lead over Alex Davison and won both Saturday races at Surfers Paradise.
It is the first series win for an individual under the McElrea Racing team banner. McElrea Racing has also sealed the title in the teams event.
Campbell, 21, won the first race on Saturday from Michael Almond and then beat Davison in the second race.
Almond and Davison also secured a third each so along with Campbell are the front runners going into race 3 this afternoon.
Campbell won by three seconds in each Saturday race, such is his supremacy. The Warwick driver will again start from pole today so will be hard to beat on a circuit known to be difficult for overtaking.
After the race he told Carrera Cup officials it was great to secure his first win and the first for McElrea Racing.
"We've worked so hard for this over the past two years so to finally win the Carrera Cup championship is unbelievable. I'm just speechless,” he said.
Campbell recently trialled for a position in Porsche racing in Europe, his second trip to Europe on a Porsche sponsored trip in less than a year. Last year, he had the opportunity to race a Porsche on ice.
Carrera Cup Race Schedule Today: 12:55pm Race 3 (20 laps)
