Warwick duo aim for state team this week
HOCKEY: Warwick pair Jake Reid and Matt Eastwell will be aiming to snare state selections when they play for Darling Downs in the State Open Schoolboys Championships starting today.
Reid goes to Warwick State High School and Eastwell is a student at Assumption College. The championships will run until Sunday.
Both boys are in year 12 and this year is Reid’s fourth in the Darling Downs open team.
“I played my best state championship hockey in my first season in the open team in year 9,” he said.
“It was exciting to be the youngest in the team and I scored a goal from centre forward in the first game.”
He has moved back in the field in the past four years and expects to be one of the back four this year.
“I seem to be getting put at the defensive end,” Reid said.
Reid has represented Queensland at primary school when in year 7 at Warwick East State School when he played in Melbourne.
He also played for Queensland at under-16 level in Perth and was a shadow for the state team at U13 level.
This season, he is playing A1 hockey for Red Lions in Toowoomba and for Wyverns in Warwick, the same team as Eastwell.
This week, Eastwell will be lining up for the regional open team for the third successive year.
The Darling Downs team, coached by Brent Garske, has assembled twice a week in Toowoomba for the past fortnight.
Last year, Reid and Eastwell were part of the regional team which finished third in 2014 and sixth last year.
Eastwell said it would be nice to make the state team.
“I will probably be in the backs where I have been in the past but prefer the forwards,” Eastwell said.
He is upbeat about the team hopes believing some of the Toowoomba boys have built up some combinations down the years.
