Father lobbying for AFA

DADS like to do things for their kids.

Some coach soccer teams, some teach guitar and some pass on sausage cooking secrets, but Warwick father David Plummer has loftier aspirations.

He wants to make the world a better place.

His inspiration is his five-year-old daughter Harriet and her six-year-old brother Elliot.

“I think I am like fathers everywhere; I just want the world to be a better, safer and happier place for my children,” Mr Plummer said.

And as man who has spent 30 years teaching youngsters in classrooms across south-east Queensland, he believes he has a fair idea of where to start – with families.

“I came to Warwick in the early 1980s and most families were ‘intact’, you know a mother, father and children,” Mr Plummer said.

“But a decade later even here we were seeing more children from broken families and that comes with its own challenges – emotional, social and behavioural.”

This observation was one of the catalysts for his involvement in the Australian Family Association, a group committed to lobbying for government policies which support families and bolster community appreciation of “natural” families.

“I believe the well-being of families is essential to the stability, prosperity and morality of our community,” he said.

“Strong family units guiding and nurturing young children are vital.”
