Warwick fields 15 for state contest
FIFTEEN Warwick polocrosse players, across men's, women's and juniors, have been selected to play in the South East Zone team for next month's Queensland Zone Polocrosse Titles.
One familiar face in the men's team is Cameron Shepherd.
Shepherd has played at state and national level before, but said this year's zone titles would be a little bit different.
"The titles are being played in Capella, which is near Emerald," he said.
"I have never played there before and I am looking forward to something different."
Warwick normally fields a few more than 15 players, but Shepherd said the cost and distance of travel meant some had chosen not to play.
Shepherd has been playing the sport since he was 15 years old and he is pretty confident the all the South East Zone teams will go well.
"Traditionally we have strong teams through all of the grades," he said.
Depending on how well teams played, Shepherd said, they could expect to play up to three or four games over July 6-7.
Shepherd said next year's national titles, which will be played out in Darwin, would be on the minds of many of the players, including his.
"I played for the national team last year and hope to do it again," he said.
Of the 15 Warwick players in the team, six of them are Warwick's junior polocrosse players.
Shepherd said it was great to see.
"A lot of the juniors will be hoping to make nationals as well," he said.
"We have some very talented juniors at Warwick and all of them have what it takes to make it to the next level."
The juniors heading to Capella are: Jordon McGrath, Anthony O'Leary, Lauren McKenzie, Sophie Wells, Keely McGrath and Darcy Liesegang.
