Warwick folk singer back home
WARWICK musician Joel Anthony will debut new material next week as he takes to the stage at Belle Vue Cafe.
Growing up in Warwick, Joel has more recently lived abroad in England, which he said solidified his passion for music.
After training in violin and vowing never to play, the singer-songwriter said he now spent much of his spare time building soulful guitar tunes.
"Travel was really the pinnacle, the changing point for me playing music, and I think that's why I'm so keen to play in Warwick," Joel said.
"I didn't know Warwick had such a strong music scene until recently and it's definitely getting more support, with places like Bluebird and Belle Vue supporting musicians, which is very exciting.
"I think at some stage I'd have to leave Warwick again but I'm really excited to play here and share my music with people I grew up with."
With a instrument maker and a musician in his family, Joel said music was in his blood.
While he said his just "came to him", he said he liked to craft more complex melodies and lyrics, citing Dave Matthews and Dan Mangan as inspirations.
"I've been writing my own songs since I was 16 and I enjoy playing weird chords," Joel said.
"My sound I suppose is sort of folk, and when I write I always like to start off with a strong melody.
"I've written a lot about travel but I like to have songs that create an atmosphere more than being just about one thing."
Joel Anthony will play at the Belle Vue, with special guest Ayden Roberts, next Thursday, May 19. Doors open at 7pm for the all-ages gig, with tickets at $10.
