Warwick footballer set to sign scholarship with the Force
RUGBY UNION: After just one serious season of rugby union, The Scots PGC College student Will Dearden has made the first step towards a Super Rugby career.
He is on the verge of signing a scholarship with the Future Force Foundation in Western Australia, an arm of the Western Force Super Rugby franchise.
Dearden will move to Perth in January and play in the short national under-20 competition which starts in March.
His mother Kathy Dearden said he would be affiliated with a club in Perth and be part of the U20 squad which played in other competitions.
"Last year, the Force U20s played in a competition in Mauritius,” she said.
"He was noticed at the Queensland Schoolboy Trials and we have received phone calls from five premier grade clubs, including one from Sydney, and the Western Force.”
Scots PGC rugby coach Damien Cahill said Dearden dominated in the lineouts for both the school and Warwick in B-grade Darling Downs rugby union this season.
"He is a special kid and is 199cm tall and still growing at age 17,” Cahill said.
"Will has good footwork and is quite quick for a big unit.
"It is amazing for Will to be offered a contract with a professional club at the end of year 12 and after only one season of serious rugby union.”
Will said he couldn't wait to get to Perth.
"They are mainly looking at me as a lock or blindside flanker, mainly lock,” he said.
Dearden also played for the Warwick Cowboys under-18 rugby league which made the TRL grand final this season. He has also impressed with his pace bowling in Warwick cricket.
