Warwick footballers each win a best player award

RUGBY LEAGUE: Warwick district junior players Yeim Costello, Timahna Tandy and Tom Beresford won best player awards in the Vic Jensen Shield competition at Arana Hills in the last week of the school holidays.

The trio played for the Darling Downs schoolboys' 11 years team which had a best win of 36-0 against Metropolitan North.

The regional team finished seventh in a field of 12 at Arana Hills. The boys made the Darling Downs team after trials in Stanthorpe.

All three are now students at Warwick West State School and the carnival at Arana Hills was their first in any school age group.

They are all aiming to make the Darling Downs schoolboys' 12 years team next year.

Yeim, who played fullback and five-eighth, scored three tries for the carnival. He was judged best back for the Darling Downs.

Tom played centre and wing in the school carnival after being in the Central Downs team which was joint winners of the under-35kg zone carnival at Kingaroy last year.

He scored one try from 50m out against Metropolitan North.

"I learnt a lot about how to take a tackle from our coach at the carnival,” Tom said.

While Yeim and Tom play U11 rugby leagu for Collegians Dragons, Timahna plays for Eastern Suburbs in Warwick.

Timahna was co-captain of the side from halfback and five-eighth and scored two tries, one after a 5m run and one when he dived over the line.
