Warwick girls in play-off thriller

WARWICK recovered from a 3-nil pool-game loss to draw nil-all with Hervey Bay in the play-off for third in the Division 4 Ladies Veterans Hockey Championships in Warwick yesterday.

There was even better news later in the day when Warwick player Libby Thomas was selected in the Queensland over-45s team.

After missing the Division 2 final in a penalty shoot-out, the Warwick Division 3 girls had an early game against Hervey Bay yesterday.

While both sides shared territorial advantage for most of the game, Hervey Bay dominated the final 10 minutes and had three penalty corners.

Due to strong defence and outstanding work by goalie Kerri Fitch, the Warwick side kept its goal intact to share third.

Hodgson said the third placing was equal to the Warwick performance last year.

“We did well to hold Hervey Bay to nil-all today after the 3-0 loss on Saturday,” Hodgson said. “Our backs and midfield played well, and goalie Kerri Fitch was outstanding.”

Jacqui Croft was the leading carnival goal scorer for Warwick with two.

Warwick lost one of its key players late in its first game when Kylie Hollist tore a hamstring.

Four Warwick players were part of the Moranbah side which won one, lost one and drew three games to finish equal fifth in Division 5.

Team member Kerryn Easey said it was fun playing with Moranbah.

“They are the only association at the titles without a synthetic surface,” Easey said.

Brisbane 1 won Division 1 2-1 in the final against Tweed Border 1 yesterday.

Townsville 1 scored a golden goal against Gold Coast 1 in Division 2 after each side was reduced to four players to break a deadlock.

Rockhampton 1, Mt Isa and Redlands were victors in divisions three to five respectively.
