Warwick Gold Cup winner talks about success at last in major draft in the nation
CAMPDRAFTING: Coolah (NSW) rider Troy Palmer was happy the mare he rode to win the Pryde's EasiFeed Warwick Gold Cup campdraft was passed in at auction earlier this year.
The eight-year-old mare owned by Richard Bull from Tamarang Quarter Horse Stud just south of Tamworth was passed in at a sale earlier this year and Palmer was able to ride her to his first victory in the Melbourne Cup of campdrafting.
Palmer rode Whos Devine to a score of 87 in the run off between four combinations which finished on 267 after three rounds.
Palmer answers some questions about his winning ride:
Were you nervous before the run off: Not when I was competing as I was too worried about getting the job done but I was nervous when the last two riders were on course in the run off.
Tell us about the horse: She is an eight-year-old quarter horse owned by Richard Bull from Tamarang Quarter Horse Stud just south of Tamworth.
I gather you were lucky you were able to ride the mare: Yes, she was offered at a sale in February and the highest bid was $42,000 and she was passed in as the owner wanted $50,000.
I am glad now she was passed in.
How close have you been before in the cup: I have had a few third, fourth and fifth placings. I have led half a dozen times going into the final.
Have many Warwick campdrafts have you missed in the past 25 years: One or two when I was riding broncs and bulls or injured.
Who has had the most influence on your career: My father Trevor, uncle Bob Palmer and Bruce McNaughton.
