Warwick golfers break 24-year drought
WARWICK golfers have taken out the top spot in Australia's oldest interclub competition, using the same format, for the first time in 24 years.
Jay Roberts captained his team, which comprised of Declan Murphy, Kris McLennan, Rhys Farrell, Josh Hynes, Charlie Morrison and Don Warrener, to victory in the Golf in Australia Cup on Sunday.
Played in Warwick since 1924, the cup has been won by Warwick 19 times.
Warwick Golf Club president Don Stewart said each team played two 18-hole matches on the day.
Warwick was victorious against Borneo Barracks on a countback in the morning.
The team then defeated Toowoomba City by four matches to two with one drawn.
Kris McLennan and Declan Murphy did the team proud by winning both of their matches.
Mr Stewart said it was believed the competition had always been played in Warwick.
"It's all played in very good spirit, everybody was tickled pink because the course is the best condition it's been in,” he said.
"The golf is serious but it's played in a good spirit.”
Mr Stewart said the majority of players in the Warwick team worked their way through the junior ranks.
"It's really lovely to see the golfers grow up and turn into accomplished golfers,” he said.
Mr Stewart said the club was planning to start a men's coaching clinic next summer, to accompany the ladies clinic that is already drawing about 50 participants, to continue nurturing local talent.
