A TRUE champion of Warwick's heritage has been honoured for her promotion and preservation of local history in the region.

Janice Flood was presented with the Royal Historical Society of Queensland's Centenary Medal at a ceremony this month.

The medal was last awarded in 2013 and the society presents the medal to those they believe have contributed exceptionally to the history and heritage of Queensland.

Mrs Flood said she was noticed particularly for theestablishment of theSouthern Downs Heritage Festival.

"Our first festival in 2016 had 25 community groups and five businesses involved,” she said.

"We had 30 community groups involved with 37 events held during the 2017 Southern Downs Heritage Festival.”

Mrs Flood said Dr Denver Beanland, who had been the president of the RHSQ, was asked if he would open the first festival.

"He was very impressed that a community could come together and produce such a festival and with such enthusiasm,” she said.

"It was through conversations with those present that he became aware of the work that I had been doing.”

As well as being the guiding force behind the heritage festival, Mrs Flood has been instrumental in the preservation and direction of the Pringle Cottage precinct in Dragon St and much more.

Mrs Flood said she was humbled to be recognised for the work she had done.

"Especially as it was something I did because I loved doing it,” she said.

"And thanks to all those who have helped bring these ideas to fruition along the way.

"The award also belongs to all of those who when I said 'let's have a heritage festival', jumped on board and are still enthusiastic.”
