Warwick High student returns to competitive cross country with a victory

CROSS COUNTRY: Claire Kelly won her first Border cross country title with a convincing win in the 16 years event at Allora this week.

The Warwick State High School student hasn't competed at district or regional level since primary school, but late last year started running for fitness.

"I run three kilometres most days and 40km last week," Kelly said.

She has run up to the half-marathon distance.

Kelly won in a time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds, for the 4km, and is planning to go in one Daily News Pentath-run event on May 21-22.

Warwick State High School won the overall title with 153 points from The Scots PGC College on 104. Stanthorpe State High School finished on 93 points, Assumption College on 69 and Clifton State High School on 61.

The open events were won by Darcy Meek (Scots PGC) and Maddy Ross (Warwick High).

Students from 11 secondary schools competed in 13-19 years events, which followed Southern Downs 10-12 years trials.

The top five in each 10-12 years age group qualified for Darling Downs regionals on May 24 at Kearney Springs in Toowoomba. Schools have the choice of who to nominate for regional 13-19 years trials on the same day.
