Warwick hockey hits the park with super league
HOCKEY: After five rounds of the 2018 Warwick Hockey Association season, a clear ladder has emerged with Corinthians dominating in both men's and women's competitions.
In the men's, Corinthians sit on 15 points, Wyverns have 12, Harlequins have nine points and Saints are yet to have a win. In the women's competition Corinthians have 16 points, Harlequins have nine, Saints have seven points and Wyverns sit on two points.
Last weekend the club held the first round of its Condamine Sports Club Super League competition.
The competition sees all A-grade players from the different clubs mixed in together and selected for two super league teams.
In the women's game Chicks with Sticks 5 (Kerri Fitch2, Yasmin McWhinney 1, Deb Rhodes 1, Laura Donn 1) defeated She Devils 1 (Danica Schnitzerling 1), with Deb Rhodes taking out the player of the match award.
In the men's competition, Warriors 5 (Andrew Millard 3, Garth Miller 1, Chris Malone 1) defeated Riverhawks 1 (Matt Eastwell 1) and Chris Malone was named player of the match.
Game two of the super league competition will take place on May 26 and game three will be on June 23.
This is the fourth year the super league competition has been held and Warwick Hockey Association secretary Meghan Keleher said it was fun, fast hockey.
"It gives all the players a chance to compete at a higher level and the opportunity to go up against their own club team mates," she said.
"It's also really good for our younger generations to see what they can aspire to be in the years to come."
This year also sees the first time club members will pay a volunteer levy.
Keleher said members could earn that back by volunteering for club positions and roles.
"It's a way of guaranteeing we have enough people to do all the jobs around the club and so far it's working."
