ONE of Australia's best motorcycle racers was at Morgan Park Raceway at the weekend to support competitors in the ASBK Australian Superbike Championships.

After retiring from racing in 2006, champion racer Troy Bayliss is trackside helping young riders fulfil their racing dreams.

The three-time World Superbike Championships winner has spent his whole racing career with Ducati, and is now helping to nurture the next generation of motorcycle racers with the Desmo Sport Ducati team.

Despite only being on track for the two-up lap with Mike Jones, Mr Bayliss, 47, said he enjoyed riding at Morgan Park Raceway.

"I've been here twice before but never actually rode but it's a nice facility," he said.

"It's nice to be invited out for the Superbike Championships with the Ducati team.

"We've got some good racers in our ranks like Callum Spriggs and Robbie Menzies.

"We've also got Tom Toparis who's fourth fastest at the moment and hoping to make it into the top three for the last qualifying session today and Mike Jones who actually won the 2015 class title and is chasing a similar result."

On Saturday it was Wayne Maxwell who was leading the competition, with Troy Herfoss and Glenn Allerton also tipped as hot contenders.

"This is a tough competition - everyone in the lower classes not on a superbike wants to make it up there with all the others onto the faster bikes," Mr Bayliss said.

"Making it overseas at the moment for a lot of racers is the ultimate goal, but I'm interested in nurturing this event for the guys to be better able to make a living here - a lot of the time you have to be in Europe or America to be doing it well.

"We've definitely got a strong pool of up-and- coming racers, like Mike (Jones) who we gave a wild card to and Callum Spriggs is one of the fastest guys in Australia and they're hungry for it."

Despite never taking an Australian Superbikes Championship title, Mr Bayliss said he was enjoying helping other riders.

"It is tough in Australia but teams like Ducati and Perrelli are really supporting us well and making it possible for us to be here in the Australian Championships," he said.

"My son Oli is 13 and he'll actually be joining us for the last round down in Victoria but he's competing in the dirt track championship in Gunnedah this weekend."
