Warwick improves dramatically in girls hockey

HOCKEY: The Warwick girls went down 2-1 to Redbacks in its first game of the day in the Queensland under-13 hockey championships at Hervey Bay.

The team got the chance to come back from a heavy 7-0 loss in its first round robin game against Redlands.

Warwick led midway through the first half with a goal to Mackenzie Dammers. The team valiantly maintained its lead until an equalising goal by Redlands in the last minute of the first half.

The second half was an arm wrestle with both sides having opportunities to score denied due to excellent goalkeeping.

Redlands took the lead with 15 minutes to go and thanks to their goalkeeper were able to protect their lead to win 2-1.

This was Warwick’s best performance of the tournament and the team’s effort was praised by the Redlands coach.

Lily Rickert was outstanding for Warwick in defence.

Warwick plays Gold Coast in its final carnival game at 1.30pm today on a grass field at Hervey Bay.
