Warwick junior football back with huge numbers for season

SOCCER: Junior football returns to Warwick today with the start of the 2018 season at Queen's Park.

More than 300 young soccer fanatics have already signed up in what will be another huge year with 36 teams taking to the park every Saturday morning.

Warwick Wolves registrar Rob Davey said junior numbers had traditionally been strong for the club.

"This year is certainly no different, we've still been signing kids up over the last few days.

"If you've forgotten or just haven't had the chance, there's still time. Come on down, we certainly want to make sure everyone who wants to play, gets a game.”

This year will see seven different age groups from the cubs (four and five year olds) through to the premier teams (13-15 year olds).

This morning's activities kick off at about 8.30am when families can head along to the grounds to complete their administration.

Davey said there would be facilities to complete registration payments, purchases of shorts and socks at the clubhouse.

"Those that have already completed all the administrative tasks can go directly to your field to meet you coach,” he said.

"There will be team information at the centre of each field and volunteers available to help direct kids to their teams and answer any other questions regarding the season they may have.

"Here the kids will meet their coach and team mates, discuss training times and be presented with their jerseys.”

Davey said there would be an official season opening at 9.45am.

"Several councillors will be in attendance, so it will be an opportunity to thank them for a $10,000 grant which allowed us to make significant improvements to the clubhouse,” he said.

"We're very grateful to the Southern Downs Regional Council for that support.”

The senior season has already started with the men's team having played four games for one win, one draw and two losses. This week the team will take on the fifth place Rockville looking for a win to widen the gap.
