Warwick motorists paying way above 'fair price' for petrol
WARWICK drivers are being slogged at the bowser and are paying 11c a litre more than the state's fair fuel price.
RACQ spokeswoman Lauren Richie said petrol prices were affected by many different factors.
"We need to take into account world oil prices, and Singapore crude oil prices, as this is the oil used to make Australian petrol, so we go off that Singapore oil price and the Australian dollar plays a part as well," she said.
"So if both these are low then we may see a decrease in fuel prices, but it won't happen immediately.
"How much we pay also depends on terminal prices, taxes, wholesale prices and of course the retail prices.
"And obviously all along the line, everyone has to make a profit."
Mrs Richie said with all this information the good news was that they were able to work out what they believed to be the RACQ fair fuel price for each region.
"We currently believe Warwick's fair fuel price to be $1.10, but at the moment the average fuel price in Warwick is $1.21," she said.
"If you're not seeing petrol prices at around $1.10, then you're not paying a fair price for petrol."
It has also been discovered that Warwick drivers are paying 13c a litre more for their petrol than their Toowoomba neighbours.
The average petrol price in Toowoomba is $1.08 a litre.
Mrs Richie said fuel pricing generally came down to competition.
"In Toowoomba there are 32 petrol stations, Warwick has (nine)," she said.
"Petrol stations in Toowoomba, in an effort to drive customers to their bowsers, will drop the price, and in reply other petrol stations will match the price to remain competitive."
Mrs Richie said south-east Queensland had a petrol price cycle.
"This is where we see petrol prices drop until they reach a low price and then shoot straight up to the top price and so on," she said.
"Regional Queensland doesn't have this cycle so you don't get the high highs and low lows.''
RACQ'S fair fuel price is based on market data and RACQ research.
It is what RACQ considers to be a fair fuel price for motorists to pay for unleaded petrol in south-east Queensland.
