Warwick orienteer to compete in world championships
ORIENTEERING: Warwick competitor Simeon Burrill is in Europe preparing for his second appearance at the Junior World Orienteering Championships.
The championships are in Engadin, St Moritz, Switzerland, on July 9-15 and will be followed by Swiss Orienteering Week on July 16-23.
Burrill fine tuned his form for the world championships by competing in the Queensland Sprint Orienteering Championships at Marist College, Ashgrove on Sunday.
He tied for second place in the M20 class, 24 seconds behind the winner.
Earlier this year, he competed in sprint races on courses around universities in Melbourne and Geelong in the National Orienteering League.
He was placed third in two races, four in one race and fifth in one race in a field of 30 men under the age of 20.
After finished second overall behind Victorian competitor and long-time rival Patrick Jaffe, Burrill said he was ecstatic about his results as sprint orienteering was his weakest discipline.
“It is very satisfying to compete consistently after all the hard training,” he said.
His last major event interstate was the Easter Three-day Event in Canberra.
Performances in events in Canberra and Victoria were considered by national selectors in naming the team for Switzerland.
Burrill has been eligible to compete in the world juniors for two years and has made the team both times.
With two more chances in 2017-2018, he has the opportunity to match the efforts of older sister Lilian who made national teams for four successive years.
His parents and four sisters have all competed in orienteering down the years.
Earlier this year, he won the Doc Bodimeade Encouragement Award at the annual Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Year dinner. He has won multiple junior monthly sports awards down the years.
He was also a major winner of sports awards at Warwick State High School before graduating at the end of 2016. Burrill has also competed in cross country, athletics and played for the Redbacks in Aussie rules.
