FEDERAL Treasurer Joe Hockey said all you need is a good paying job to buy your first home - despite historically high house prices in many Australian capital cities.
So the more affordable prices of regional centres like Warwick make these locations more attractive options for many looking to enter the home market.
Warwick Credit Union CEO Lewis von Stieglitz said Warwick had a relatively affordable property market.
"Warwick is a very affordable city, first-home buyers in particular are very lucky as prices are much more reasonable," he said.
"In Warwick you can get an entry level house for say $250,000 or less, and it's much more affordable to get that on an average wage in Warwick than in Sydney where the average wage is higher but the average house is around $1 million."
Casey and George Le Bherz and their three young children recently made the move from Brisbane to Warwick for George's job and find the Rose City is far more affordable.
"We came here more for a relocation for work but when we looked into the Warwick area it was a lot cheaper to live," Mrs Le Bherz said.
"The house and the mortgage are much cheaper, and I didn't have to work so I can stay home with the kids.
"We had bought our house in Brisbane, a three bedroom brick home on 689 square metres, for about $400,000 eight years ago, and we paid $75,000 less for a four bedroom home on 1500 square metres here, so we're very happy."
Principle licensee at Southern Downs Realty Brent Bowles agreed that Warwick was more affordable but said a lack of employment opportunities meant fewer people were taking advantage of better prices.
"I have found over the past few years, not only for younger buyers but people of all ages, affordability and also the lifestyle is a major reason people are moving," Mr Bowles said.
"But if there are no jobs then there is no incentive to move."
Mrs Le Bherz said if it had not been for her husband's job, the affordable housing prices would not have been such a drawcard for the couple.
"Work is probably the main reason why you live somewhere," she said.
"I think it would be harder if you didn't have work to come to, but it's been good for us because we're exploring areas around Warwick we've never been to, stuff we probably wouldn't have done otherwise."
Mr Bowles said council red tape and lack of customer service was a major reason for the absence of jobs.
"More people would come to Warwick for affordability if there were more jobs here," he said.
"State and local government need to promote industry in Warwick to get growth and more jobs.
"We don't need to be as big as Toowoomba, no one wants that, but if we can't keep our kids here because there are no jobs, what's going to happen?"
Tips for home buyers
Mr von Stieglitz said the best way to own property was to start saving:
Start putting away money as soon as you can, even if it's a small amount, to get a deposit
Buy the house you can afford now not the one you could in future
