Warwick players shine to win bronze in state carnival
RUGBY LEAGUE: Four Assumption College students represented the region in the Darling Downs open schoolboys rugby league team which finished third in the state championships at Wynnum.
The team, coached by Assumption College deputy principal Craig Frattini, won three of its four games.
Cody Byrne started at lock in each game and Sam Frattini was hooker.
Tino Stowers came off the bench at prop and Tom Lloyd was used off the bench as an outside back.
Stowers recently played for the Western Mustangs team in the Australian under-18 final against the Parramatta Eels.
Byrne said the best win was 28-16 against Northern.
Darling Downs beat South West and Northern in round games and lost 20-10 to Metropolitan North in the semi-final. They then beat Sunshine Coast in the play-off for third.
"We were in the semi until the last 10 minutes when Metropolitan North scored a try,” Craig Frattini said.
South Coast beat Metropolitan North in the final to win the carnival.
Frattini said it was the best performance by Darling Downs in recent years at a state open rugby league carnival.
"You need everyone to do their job at a state carnival and the four from Warwick all played well,” he said.
