Warwick retirees off to shape the Commonwealth Games
IT WAS the chance Helen Harris wasn't going to miss.
To her and husband Evan, the opportunity to be an integral part of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
"It was about five or six years ago now, and we were holidaying on the coast,” Mrs Harris said.
"The call out for Games volunteers was all over the TV and radio and I thought it was something I just had to do.”
The volunteers for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are known as 'Games Shapers'.
Still working full-time then, Mrs Harris said it was by coincidence they were on the coast again with only a few days left to register.
"I hoped that by the time the Games rolled around I'd be retired,” Mrs Harris said.
"So I said to Evan, 'I'm going to do it, and you're going to do it too'.
"And that was it, we signed up - I didn't really hold out much hope at being selected as 46,000 people applied to be a volunteer and they only needed 15,000, but we were both selected.”
Mrs Harris said their locality and proximity to the Gold Coast would have helped.
"But in saying that, I'm a member of Facebook page for Games volunteers and they're coming from all over the world - Canada, New Zealand, even the UK.”
Mrs Harris said she had been impressed by a Warwick woman who had volunteered for the Sydney Olympics.
"That always stuck with me, I remember thinking what a great thing to do,” she said.
Mrs Harris will work in a spectator services role at Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre and Mr Harris will start at the Gold Coast Airport on Tuesday greeting and assisting athletes and dignitaries as they arrive for the Games.
"We're really excited,” Mr Harris said.
"The whole experience will be something to cherish.”
