Warwick Lapidary Club fossickers rock out with gemstones

WHAT hides beneath our feet is not always seem the most interesting, but for members of the Warwick Lapidary Club rocks and minerals are an endless source of fascination.

Lapidary involves collecting and shaping gemstones and minerals, a skill which jewellery instructor Ann Warrell said allowed her to make unique pieces for her friends and family.

"We teach people how to solder and make silver fittings for their gems, and we also do chain mail," Mrs Warrell said.

"You've got to have an interest in rocks and gemstones of course but really it's about learning to use the tools and use your imagination to make the jewellery."

Vice-president Syd Woodrow said members met twice a week to work on their own stones, though many remained in collections just as they are found, such as his own Northern Territory amethysts (pictured).

"When members join, older members will work through a stone that we've either given them or they've brought along, from cutting it to faceting and polishing it, and we can help them see what works," Mr Woodrow said.

"This hobby really extends to a lot of things including our own mineral collections."

Members find their own stones, fossicking outside Warwick or at the club's annual Rock Swap.

"We're not as big as other clubs in Queensland but we're a happy club and we do enjoy ourselves," Mrs Warrell said.

For those interested in joining the club or finding out more about the unique hobby, drop by the Lapidary Club on Horsman Rd near Barnes Park on a Wednesday afternoon or Saturday from 10am.
