Warwick rower off to Head of the Yarra in Melbourne
ROWING: Warwick rower Harriet Hudson is heading to Melbourne for the Head of the Yarra in late November after getting her first taste of international competition this year.
Hudson, who went to primary school at Wheatvale before starting her rowing career at Somerville House in Brisbane, competed in the Australian under-19 rowing team in the World Junior Championships in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, this year.
She started this year with five gold medals at the nationals, including the single scull at a regatta on the course used for the 2000 Olympics at Penrith in Sydney.
Hudson was the 2014 Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Year.
The Warwick rower moved to Sydney in January and is now a member of the Sydney Rowing Club where she is coached by Donovan Cech and Lachlan Carter.
In Rotterdam, she competed in the U19 girls single scull with her aim to reach the A final.
She finished sixth overall after making the A final in her first international competition. The overall winner from Italy was competing in the world championships for the fourth time.
Before the world championships, Hudson and her Australian teammates spent 10 days at the European Training Centre in Gavirate, Italy.
Hudson will compete in a Sydney Rowing Club mixed eight in the Head of the Yarra over 8.6km in Melbourne on November 26.
Earlier this year, she won two gold medals at the nationals in eighths but her rowing has predominately been in single and double scull.
Her major focus next year will be to push for Australian under-23 selection only three months after she turns 19.
At present, she completes 10 to 12 training sessions a week.
Her younger sister Ella is now in Year 10 at Somerville House and like her older sister was a multiple medallist at this year's club nationals.
Ella won three gold medals in the Queensland school championships at Bucca Weir and is now preparing for January's state club championships at Lake Wyaralong near Boonah.
