Warwick RSL aiming to retain Bill Hoiberg Trophy
CRICKET: The Bill Hoiberg Memorial Trophy will be up for grabs in the game between the Warwick RSL team and the Queensland Cricketers Club (QCC) at Slade Park on Saturday.
The Warwick RSL side, which holds the trophy, will be led by hard-hitting top order batsman David Gavin who is coming off a 2015-2016 premiership win with the Valleys team in Stanthorpe cricket.
Warwick Cricket Association Team of the Decade players (2000-2009) Darren Byrne, and Chris Cantwell will bring decades of experience to the over 40s team from Warwick.
Wheatvale greats Bernie Ryan and Cantwell are likely to open the bowling for the Warwick RSL team.
The host team also includes current Mitchell Shield representative batsman and left arm spinner Scott McLennan from the Maryvale club.
Other local players from the past include former RSL Diggers club players Jeff Morris, Gavin Scheiwe, Jamie Holmes, Darren Costello and Colin O'Brien.
Mark Fischer is better known as a tennis coach but is an accomplished batsman who showed plenty of form for Killarney. Team organisers are hoping Warwick opening batsman Brendan Malone can play in a game where each side bats 12 and fields 11. Batsmen retire at 40 if not dismissed earlier.
The match will commence around 10am Saturday and spectators are welcome at the ground.
The QCC team has not been announced but usually includes some former Queensland Bulls and Australian players like Peter Clifford, Scott Prestwidge or Greg Rowell as well as former Brisbane and Gold Coast first-grade players.
Clifford has played the past two games in Warwick and was dismissed for a duck last year by Ryan.
