Warwick rugby star to Perth for sevens nationals

RUGBY: Assumption College student Sarah Ogden has a dream to be a professional sportswoman and is about to represent Queensland in a second sport.

She will play for the Queensland Reds Youth (17 years) rugby sevens team in the nationals in Perth on December 9-11.

Ogden made the state team after representing Darling Downs in state trials at Gold Coast and Ballymore.

"I was inspired to try rugby sevens after my older sister Jess competed in the Army team in a competition in Brisbane,” she said.

"I said to myself, I want to play that, it looks fun,” Ogden, 17, said.

She represented the Queensland 15 years schoolgirls team in the netball nationals in Melbourne, playing goal attack and goal shooter in 2014.

This year, she was a shadow for the Queensland 17 years team after competing in selection trials over a three-month period.

She has made the Brisbane West Lions Under-19 team for next year's State League.

At the weekend, she attended a Lions bonding camp on the Sunshine Coast which was also attended by former Warwick player Stephanie Noble.

"I plan to live in Brisbane next year and study for a FC11 Diploma in Sports Development at the University of Queensland,” she said.

"The diploma will be netball specific with training in the morning and lectures in the afternoon. Two Firebirds players are part of the program.”

At this stage, she is concentrating on following a netball dream.

"I have only started playing rugby this year and consider it more my fun sport at this stage,” she said.

"Rugby sevens has been given a spurt by our success at the Olympics.”

Ogden's dream is to get as far as she can in netball.

"My dream is to play in the national league but there are so many girls with the same idea,” she said.

"I enjoy training and going to the gym.”

While she has played goal attack and goal shooter most of her career, Ogden is set to play centre court this season.
