Warwick runners up in hockey
HOCKEY: The Warwick over 35s side had never experienced a new-style penalty shoot-out until they had to contest one on Sunday for the division 1 state title.
In the end, Warwick went down 3-0 to Bundaberg in the shoot-out to finish runners-up.
Warwick and Bundaberg were 0-all at the end of the final and the teams then went into a penalty shoot-out.
Each team was allotted five shots and the shooters had eight seconds to take the ball from the 25-yard line and beat the keeper in a one-on-one situation for a goal.
Bundaberg netted their first three and Warwick failed at goaling within the eight seconds with their first three shots so finished runners-up to Bundaberg in the top division in over 35s.
"We hadn't trained for a shoot-out so it was definitely new to us," team member Matt Hagenbach said.
"The team was glad we didn't have to go into extra time as we were exhausted after six games.
"It was great to play in the same team as Olympian Grant Smith who was brilliant in the Warwick team."
In round games, Warwick beat Gladstone 2-0 on Friday night and then beat Brisbane 2 7-0 and Mackay 3-1 on Saturday.
On Sunday morning, Warwick beat Sunshine Coast 4-0 to qualify for the final.
Goalie Peter Keeble from the Warwick team won player of the final.
Adam Byrne was selected vice-captain of the Queensland over 35s side to play in the nationals in Cairns alongside team-mates Hagenbach and Peter Sommers.
