WATCH: Warwick Santa sale a crowd-pleaser
MARKET prices were high at the sixth annual Santa Gertrudis sale at the Warwick Saleyards last week.
Started by Elizabeth Piggott of Rosevale Park Santa stud and Nowlan's livestock agent David Friend the sale typically welcomes a strong market in April.
Ms Piggott said there were other Santa Gertrudis sales at Eidsvold, Boonah and Beaudesert, but that hosting a local auction was important for promoting the breed on the Southern Downs.
"There are quite a lot of Santa cattle around Warwick so there's no better place to have a Santa sale," she said.
"I've been selling them here for quite a while and they always sell well here."
Joining Ms Piggott was Georgia Bellingham who said Santa Gertrudis was a fairly popular breed among Southern Downs producers.
Miss Bellingham is taking over her grandparent's property and looking to become a stud breeder herself.
The Warwick local sold a Santa Gertrudis bull for $2900 at Thursday's sale.
"I personally like the cherry red colour you can get in them, I think it looks good," Miss Bellingham said.
"At the moment I'm just working on getting a stud name and becoming registered."
