Warwick shooters win at clay target championships

SHOOTING: Warwick pair Mark Locke and Ross Bartley were the first two AA grade winners in the City of Warwick Championships at the Warwick Clay Target Club Range on Sunday.

George Costanzo (Ballandean) won the 30-shot double barrel championship from retired GP Dr Phillip Keller (Toowoomba).

Bartley won the first event of the day, the single barrel championship, and Locke won the pointscore event.

The championships attracted 44 shooters, aged from 11 into their 80s, from as far away as Texas, Kyogle and Brisbane.

Pat Dignam is club secretary/treasurer and first competed with the Warwick club six decades ago at the age of 16.

He lived in Brisbane for a time but has rarely missed a shoot since he re-joined the Warwick Clay Target Club in 1998.

Dignam enjoys every minute of his time in his chosen sport.

"Everyone is a gentleman/gentlewoman at our shoots, people go home with a smile on their faces,” he said.

"All shooters have an opportunity to be a winner as competition is in four grades.”

Winners from the Warwick club included David Cameron (A grade single barrel), Mick Lawlor (C grade 20-target pointscore) and Cameron Schoenfisch (AA 20-target pointscore).

Schoenfisch had the only 60 out of a possible 60 in the AA 20-target pointscore.

There is a circuit for clay target shooters in the area with shoots from the first to the fourth Sunday from Warwick to Toowooomba, Ballandean and on the fourth Sunday to Texas.

Shooters have any fifth Sundays off.

It is likely six Warwick shooters will travel to Toowoomba but more will travel to Ballandean and Texas shoots.

The next Warwick club shoot is on July 1 at 9am.
