Warwick slow to dial in crime

REPORTING crime over the phone is not ringing true with Warwick residents.

An APN Newsdesk analysis of one month of calls to Policelink's 131 444 hotline shows just 0.29% of reports stemmed from our region.

From April 1-30, 70,004 crimes were reported to the 24-hour service but only 204 were from Warwick residents.

The centre in Zillmere, which deals with calls about non-urgent crimes, started five years ago to reduce workloads at police stations across the state.

Region-specific statistics were only available for phone calls to the centre and not the Policelink app or online reporting service.

Policelink operations manager Acting Inspector Julian Burke said the service was particularly important for people living long distances from police stations.

"Having the ability to have one telephone number and knowing someone from the Queensland Police Service is there to answer the phone 24/7 is a great comfort for people in regional areas," Acting Inspector Burke said.

He said with 80% of calls answered within 30 seconds, the service was reliable and a time-saver.

"It enables us to ensure there are more police on the streets doing the job people expect police to do," he said.
