Warwick small business Eftpos increase
The days of digging through the depths of a bag for a single coin or rattling change in a pocket are moving behind us and the use of plastic is over taking.
In the past 10 years the number of consumers paying with cards has doubled, with the Reserve Bank of Australia reporting the figure to be $496 billion.
Consumers are welcoming the change, upgrading their cards to technological devices to include newer methods of payments such as payWave.
Urban Mist Mobile Specialty Coffee owner Neskeen Escalante said Eftpos transactions made up the majority of his sales for his mobile coffee shop.
"From when I started two years ago, the use of card has increased to 50 per cent of all transactions," he said.
"I did start when Eftpos was beginning to take off, but there has been an increase of usage over time."
For many consumers it's the convenience card payments offer that makes it the preferable practice and this particular coffee business approves.
The small business owner said the use of Eftpos had improved his level of customer service and daily operations.
"It makes it a lot quicker and saves a lot of time at the end of the day putting together figures," he said.
Small transactions through cards are not uncommon for his customers.
" It's not strange seeing people pay for their coffees on card, it's the way we're heading."
Where some businesses repel the use of Eftpos due to increased fees, Mr Escalante said he had not been affected and didn't believe it should hinder business owners.
"There's heaps of devices out there with small fees, if vendors shop around and see what works best for them".
The coffee van owner said cash was still welcomed and was a necessity in certain regions.
