Warwick street closure no obstacle for Jumpers and Jazz
AS THE countdown to Jumpers and Jazz continues, the team behind Warwick’s quirky winter festival assured festival-goers roadworks would not disrupt displays next week.
Renovation work at Rose City Shoppingworld on Palmerin and Fitzroy Sts are in popular locations for the tree jumper displays, due to be placed next Wednesday for the duration of the festival.
Part of Fitzroy St between Palmerin St and Guy St closed to traffic earlier in the year for the redevelopment works to begin.
A McConaghy Group spokesman said renovations were on track for Fitzroy St to reopen by the end of August.
Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine said the Jumpers and Jazz committee had known for months Fitzroy St would remain closed to traffic during the festival.
“Works on the Palmerin St footpath will be finished in the next week just in time for the launch, but Fitzroy St will only have footpath access,” Ms Devine said.
“There’s about 20 trees up that street that will have treejumpers and we’ve known right from the start Fitzroy St wouldn’t be open during this year’s event and we’ve just gone ahead as normal.
“It’s a very popular area up there because of (Leslie) Park but we have no concerns because people are going to be on foot seeing the tree jumpers anyway so don’t think it will be a problem that the street is closed to traffic.”
The former Bi-Lo space has now been demolished to make way for the new Coles supermarket and Fitzroy St entrance.
A Coles spokeswoman could not provide any further update on the renovation progress at the store.
