Warwick swimmers attempt to smash a world record
SMASHING out laps in the pool isn't the only way our young Warwick swimmers can get their names into the history books.
Swimming students at WIRAC have come extremely close to breaking the world record for the amount of goggles they can put on their faces.
In 30 seconds, they need to beat the current record of 10 pairs of goggles.
Four students managed to fit 9 goggles on, which were Harry Newton, Holly Sheperd, Amity Willett, and Grace Ball.
Riley Goodwin also came close, managing to fit eight pairs between his hair line and chin, but it proved to not be overly comfortable.
"It hurts your face because they all squish in,” the 10-year-old said.
Teacher Anthony Rixon managed to fly past the current record and put on 12 pairs, but a decision is yet to be made about whether his attempt will be formally submitted to world record judges.
Head lifeguard Brad Towson was the mastermind behind the initiative.
With the Queen's Baton Relay passing WIRAC last Thursday, he said it was the perfect time to do something a little different with the attempts running over the weekend and the school holidays.
"Anything you can do to get promotion for swimming is good, there's so many drownings,” he said.
"The more fun you can make it the more they will come.”
Zoggs donated 100 pairs of goggles, which will now be given to students who need them for school swimming.
