Warwick takes shot at hosting championships
CLAY SHOOTING: The Queensland State Olympic Trap Championship has been moved to the Warwick Clay Target Club this weekend after last-minute rescheduling.
An overhaul of the Brisbane venue left the event without a home until the Warwick Club put their hand up at the last minute.
The Queensland Clay Target Association has praised the Warwick club for saving the day with some of the shooters taking part in the competition coming from New Zealand and inter-state.
Warwick is the only other Olympic discipline venue in the south-east zone and one of only four venues in Queensland.
This will be the first time that Warwick has hosted the event.
Queensland Clay Target Association State Administrator Debbie Young is expecting the move to Warwick to be a great success.
"With four days notice Warwick put their hand up and saved the day, which is such a great thing for such a small club," Young said.
"It's very likely we will beat the attendance record this week. Warwick is only a single layout but such a gorgeous, picturesque venue."
Young hopes the move will encourage new fans to the sport and if the event goes well this weekend it may open the door for future events to be held in Warwick.
"We may consider putting the carnival on rotation which would see the carnival move around outside of the usual Brisbane venue."
The State ISSF Carnival usually features three events; Olympic trap, skeet and double trap but as a single layout venue only the Olympic trap will be contested this weekend.
The other two disciplines will be organised at a later date.
There will be a practice session on Friday and shooting will begin at 8.30am on Saturday and Sunday.
