Warwick thrower ends year on a high
ATHLETICS: Ask Zac Caterson which of his throwing events is his best and he doesn't have an answer.
He enjoys javelin, discus and shot put and isn't wanting to specialise.
Last year, he won silver in shot put and discus and bronze in javelin in the state championships before going on to the nationals in Adelaide where he won bronze in under-16 shot put and was fifth in discus.
Caterson starred in athletics at Warwick West State School and Warwick State High School before moving to Brisbane Boys College in term 4 last year.
He wasn't allowed to compete in GPS athletics because he wasn't at BBC at the start of the year but was one of the support staff as the school won GPS athletics for the third time.
Caterson, 15, competed for his new school for the first time in December when he won a bronze medal with
the school team in the national school knockout competition.
He competed in open javelin and beat athletes as old as 18 in finishing first.
He beat his previous personal best by 4m with a throw of 55.36m.
This year, he is competing in rowing in term 1 and hopes to make the Year 11 First XIII for the Head of the River in March. Next week, he will go to a school rowing camp in Bundaberg.
He is taking term 2 off from competitive sport to do strength training in the school gym and will compete in basketball in term 3 and athletics at the end of the year.
"I also want to focus on my school work this year as I want to go to university after Year 12,” he said.
He is coached in Ipswich by Mick Moore.
His father Paul is his javelin coach.
