Warwick to host 10 teams in Cardinal Cup anniversary

AUSSIE RULES: The 10th anniversary Horse and Jockey Cardinal Cup will be played at Warwick Credit Union Oval on March 10-11.

For the first time, a women's competition will be played in addition to the men's competition.

Warwick Redbacks, Goondiwindi Hawks, South Toowoomba Bombers, Toowoomba Tigers, Jimboomba Redbacks and Ipswich Eagles will play off for the Cardinal Cup for men.

The women's competition includes Warwick/Ipswich, Bombers, Tigers and Dalby/Goondiwindi.

In the past nine years, a Redbacks team has won on seven occasions, four by Jimboomba and three by Warwick. Goondiwindi and Bombers each have a Cup win.

Event organiser Colin Pope said after last year's Cup, Tigers and Bombers teams suggested a women's competition be added.

"I am happy with the support for the women's competition,” Pope said.

"This is the first time Ipswich Eagles will play in the Cardinal Cup. More teams wanted to play but we can only cater for 10 teams.” First games 8am on March 10.
