Warwick to welcome foster kids
WARWICK will help to create new memories for foster kids of the Southern Downs when it plays host to the Southern Cross Kids Camps in September this year.
The camp which provides both a respite and mentorship to the children aims to develop self-worth and life skills.
"They have had some of the toughest times kids will go through," camp director Tanya Bair said.
"This camp gives them time to just be themselves; I have seen little adults come out the end as kids again".
While the camps have been run throughout Australia for the past 12 years, this is the first time an event will be held in Warwick.
Before taking on her own camp Ms Bair had experienced the work of many others in Queensland.
"I remember one girl tell me she now has a chance at a future," she said.
"For an 11-year-old to believe she doesn't have a future goes to show the mentality of the children we are working with."
With more than 250,000 cases of child abuse a year this early intervention program will help to empower those effected in previous homes.
The children also receive a memory book with a collection of photos from the camp.
"Some camp goers often don't have any photos of themselves so it is something they really cherish," Ms Bair said.
