Warwick trainer has hopes of Killarney Cup win

RACING: Warwick trainer Garry Schwenke has the chance to win his second Killarney Cup on Saturday at Allman Park.

The Warwick Turf Club meeting has attracted 104 nominations which shows how well the racing surface at Allman Park is regarded by trainers.

Schwenke will start Total Surprise in the Killarney Cup after taking over the training responsibility a month ago.

"It will be his first start after a short spell and is a bit of a step up so we will see how he goes," Schwenke said.

Total Surprise is owned by Jack Brown and Wendy Fouhy and was trained by Brown before he asked Schwenke to train the four-year-old gelding.

"I want to keep up Jack’s work with him after a win at Murwillumbah over 1530m in April," Schwenke said.

"Total Surprise is by Big Brown so we are thinking he might like a bit of distance."

One of the biggest threat to Total Surprise will be It’s All Irish, a winner last month at Warwick.

Toowoomba trainer Donald Baker is set to start It’s All Irish in the cup and has plenty of success with horses on the Allman Park Track. He records an average of one win in just under five starts.

A win with Total Surprise in the cup on Saturday would cap a great month for Schwenke who has wins in a class 1 over 1900m at Armidale and in a ratings race over 900m at Gold Coast.

The win at Gold Coast was with Sority Sister who set a track record. The filly has also won at Toowoomba and Sunshine Coast.

Schwenke has 12 horses in work in Warwick and has a swimming pool for horses to help with their preparation.

"Total Surprise loves the swimming pool," he said.
