Warwick trio play in the sevens rugby nationals
RUGBY: Three Warwick footballers travelled to Perth to play in the 2016 Youth National Sevens Championships at McGillivray Oval in Perth at the weekend.
Arnie Briel and Tish Kendall made teams to compete in the nationals after strong performances for Scots PGC and regional teams this year while Sarah Ogden, who attended Assumption College this year, made the trip to Perth to play for one of the two Queensland teams.
Briel is a back rower in the 15-man game but played in the centres for the Queensland White boys sevens team in Perth.
He suffered a shoulder injury in a trial game against Queensland Red a week earlier and aggravated the injury in Perth, which reduced his game time.
Briel's team Queensland White was in the play-off for fifth but went down 33-14 to ACT.
Ogden played for the Queensland White girls team which came seventh in the nationals in Perth.
She played outstanding rugby to make a state team in her first year in the sport after already playing netball for Queensland.
Kendall was in the national indigenous team, which came eighth in the girls competition in Perth.
She also stars for the Warwick Wolves in football and in Warwick netball.
The Queensland Red girls were clinical in both their finals, beating Western Australia in the semi final 26-14 and then going on to win the cup final with a 22-14 win against NSW Blue.
The NSW Blue boys team went through the entire championship undefeated and were impressive across the entire weekend. After a tough semi final against WA, the visitors came away with a 12-0 win. From there it was all NSW, putting on a stunning performance to beat Queensland Red boys 34-0 in the final.
