Warwick up to B grade in Downs rugby
RUGBY UNION: After two years in C grade in the Darling Downs competition, Warwick has been promoted to B grade and captain Craig Pettiford couldn't be happier.
"It is good to get the opportunity to play B grade, it is something we wanted to do at the beginning of the year but they wouldn't let us," he said.
"The move into B grade gives us the chance to become better players. The long-term aim is to again field a team in A grade.
"If the club moves to A grade, it would be good to have a support base with a B grade team.
"Most of our players are at B grade level but we will need to work on a few little things.
"Scrums were not contested in C grade, but will be contested in B grade; we have a number of fellows who can play in the front row.
"We haven't contested scrums for a long time. Andrew Skipper is our forward coach and will work on our scrummaging.
In B grade, the length of each half will be extended from 30 to 40 minutes.
"It will be good to have more football as long as our fitness holds up," he said.
Kingaroy pulled out and Darling Downs Rugby Union worried there wouldn't be enough teams so asked Warwick to play B grade. Eight clubs have A and B grade teams with St George only in A grade and Warwick in B.
Warwick will have eight home and away games.
The Warwick team beat Goondiwindi 31-24 in the 50th anniversary game at Risdon Oval and will be strengthened by Dan Barnabo, Mitch Lamb, Tim Harslett, Nick Hall, Saul Whiley, Stephen Turnbull, Chris Crouch and Brodie Frizzell.
Their first game will be at Goondiwindi on April 5 and then an away game at Roma.
Training each Thursday at 6.30pm at Risdon Oval. More players welcome or can call 0412 532956.
