Warwick wins a polocrosse nailbiter
POLOCROSSE: Warwick staved off a late charge by Wandoan in a thrilling one-point win in the Shell Cup final at Morgan Park yesterday.
The Warwick team made a strong start, leading the visitors by six points at one stage before a late resurgence by Wandoan left the scores at 14-13 in the dying minutes of the match.
Warwick captain Paul McGrath led the charge, as the teams thundered up and down the field in a hard-fought battle for the cup.
McGrath, who won best horse and rider of the match, said it was a "bloody good" win for his team.
"It's always good to have a win at home and put the silverware back in the trophy case," he said
The proud captain paid tributes to his teammates.
"They played very well," he said.
"It will take a while for us to get our combination right."
Warwick also won the A-Grade junior competition against Broncos, while Goondiwindi won the F-Grade competition.
Meanwhile, in the Barastoc Interstate Series, New South Wales dominated, winning all but one of the eight competition grades.
It was a nail-biting finish in the final match of the Interstate men's competition, with Queensland fighting back to win 21-20.
While the win wasn't enough to secure the overall series win against New South Wales, 'man of the match' Cameron Shepherd said he was proud of his team's efforts.
"Never doubt the Queensland spirit," he said. "New South Wales was a quality team."
