Warwick wins Fed Cup on Inglewood greens
GOLF: The Federation Cup is one of the most prestigious trophies in Downs and South West golf and hadn't been won by the Warwick club for 13 years.
That all changed when Marg Adcock and Mary Young headed to Inglewood for this year's competition.
The Warwick pair beat 16 other teams from Inglewood, City, Chinchilla, Stanthorpe, Cecil Plains, Texas, Pittsworth, Clifton, Cabarlah and Oakey.
They won the 4BBB with 46 points on a countback from Margie Richards and Glenda Murray from City Golf Club in Toowoomba.
Adcock said the Warwick team hit birdie, par, birdie, par on the final four holes, which gave them the advantage when the result went to a countback.
"It is a nett event which gives every player a chance to win,” she said.
"The Federation Cup fourball competition is now taken to nine-hole courses around the Downs and South West district to support clubs with nine-hole courses,” Adcock said.
"We play the course twice in an 18-hole competition. The larger clubs like Warwick with an 18-hole course get the chance to host the annual district championships on rotation.”
Adcock has won the district foursomes in the past but this is Young's first win at district level.
When asked about their best shots, Young rated her best shots on a par 3 hole across water and under trees when she hit par both times.
Adcock was happy with her putting.
"I was also happy with my fairway woods,” she said.
"We both putted well
and complemented each other, you need to putt
well to score 46 points
on our handicaps.”
The last Warwick win was by Dian Macdonald and Yvonne Pinington in 2004 when the event was held in Warwick.
The single handicap matchplay on July 15 will be the next major event for the Warwick women.
