Warwick wins the Slade Shield cricket final
JAMIE Saunders top scored with 35 as Warwick beat Goondiwindi by six wickets to win the Slade Shield cricket final at Riddles Oval on Sunday.
Warwick dismissed Goondiwindi for 113 on the back of four wickets by Paul Cantwell and two by Jason Steketee.
Brett McEvoy only conceded 11 runs in his seven overs.
Opener Saunders started the chase with 35 and both Rob Lindsay and John Cleary reached 20. Captain Neil Cantwell was seven not out when the winning runs were scored by Cleary.
Warwick won the shield for the first time in 25 years after winning the Mitchell Shield for Eastern Downs supremacy earlier in the season.
The Malone brothers, Brendan and Chris, were in the Warwick team which won this season and their father Trevor was part of the winning team which beat Roma in the Slade Shield final 25 years ago.
