Warwick Wolves junior football kicking goals
FOOTBALL: Warwick's junior footballers will take over Queens Park again this morning for round five of the 2018 season.
More than 300 eager players have signed up to play for the fresh season, ranging in age from the cubs team for four and five-year-olds right through to 16 and 17-year-olds.
Club president Cameron Davey said the club was happy to see so many youngsters playing football.
"The kids are enjoying themselves,” he said.
"It's a good fun environment and, as always, our major focus is on participation.
"We've tried to split the age groups into teams with a spread of skills so that every child gets the chance to play, be involved and enjoy their football.”
The juniors have team training on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and for those who want a little extra training, the club holds development training on Tuesday nights at Queens Park.
"We're working really hard on developing the skills of our juniors - working on those basic skills of touch, passing, movement and shooting,” Davey said..
"We want the kids to pick up the skills and also we're there to help nurture their love of the game.
"This is in the hope they continue with their junior soccer through the age groups and into senior soccer.”
Another strong focus for the Warwick Wolves in 2018 has been increased integration between the junior and senior ranks.
A great initiative has seen junior teams playing exhibition matches prior to the senior team's home games.
"This is a great opportunity for the juniors to play on the bigger stage, with a crowd cheering them on,” Davey said.
"They also walk on to the pitch with the seniors, which is a great thrill for them and it's something the young ones can aspire to reach as they grow older.
"And vice versa. There's been a stronger influence from our senior team across the junior ranks this season as well, from volunteering to coaching and mentoring.”
New and existing players are welcome to head along to Queens Park to register for the 2018 season.
"We'll find for everyone a spot to play,” Davey said.
"Participation is key. We don't want anyone missing out who is keen to play football.”
Games begin at Queens Park from 8.30am today and go through until 12.30pm.
